American Community Survey QueriesThe American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey conducted by the United States Bureau of the Census. It gathers data on demographic, economic and social characteristics at various geographic levels within the United States. Data from the ACS are aggregated into one, three and five year periods. The data presented in this query tool are aggregated at the five year level, which makes these estimates more stable for New Mexico's sparsely populated areas.
To improve the accuracy of the ACS estimates for New Mexico, we applied the percentages provided by the ACS to the mid-year population estimates produced by the University of New Mexico Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) Program. For instance, the ACS percentage from the 2009-2013 dataset were applied to 2011 New Mexico GPS population estimates to provide an estimate for the number of New Mexicans affected.
The estimates for New Mexico's 108 Small Areas were calculated by aggregating the ACS data at the census tract level and pooling the standard errors.
