Query Builder for New Mexico Environmental Public Health Tracking Multiple Cause Mortality COPD, 2001-2018 - New Mexico COPD Deaths

Mortality Data Overview

The mortality data in this query module have been derived from death certificates in participation with the National Vital Statistics System, and are maintained and provided by the New Mexico Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. They include virtually all deaths of New Mexico residents, regardless of where the death occurred. The causes of death were coded using Tenth Version of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes. The population data in this query module were produced by the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research and are considered the most accurate available for New Mexico counties. This Environmental Public Health Tracking module utilizes multiple cause coded deaths rather than only the underlying cause of death code for queries.

Getting Started

* Follow the steps to FILTER the data to a subpopulation (or leave the data unfiltered for statewide results), AND to select how to CLASSIFY variables, such as age and geography, that you want to use in the last step. * Use the last step, "How to display the data," to choose HOW TO GROUP your results and to make map and graph choices.
* When you are done selecting your query criteria, click "Submit" to get your query result.

  • Select years.

  • Selecting years

    Select a range of years. Use Ctrl to make multiple selections.

    The year groupings you select here will be used to display your results if you choose "year" below in the display the results step. For instance, if you choose "Single years" here, and choose "Year/Year Groups" in the display the results step, your query results will be displayed for single years, for the range of years you selected.

  • First choose a coding scheme to use for age groups. Default is all 11 age-adjustment age groups.

  • Would you like to include only males or only females in the results? Default includes both sexes.

  • New Mexico Race/Ethnicity Coding

    Starting in 2000, the New Mexico Department of Health developed recommendations for standard categories for the presentation of data by race and Hispanic ethnicity.

    For purposes of presentation, race and ethnicity will be presented together using the following five major categories and labels:

    American Indian or Alaska Native

    Asian or Pacific Islander

    Black or African American

    Hispanic

    White

    The Hispanic category includes no other races but White. The White category may be interpreted as "White, non-Hispanic." And the non-White race categories include both Hispanic and non-Hispanic persons.

  • Selecting Geography

    Select the geographic areas you want to include. Hold down the control (ctrl) key to make multiple selections.
    First choose a geography type. Default is all New Mexico counties.

To display a map, you must select Geographic Area in Display By (category) and None in Group By (series)

Primary group by field

Defines the data's primary grouping dimension. The primary grouping is required and also controls the ordering of the result's data rows. In MS-Excel and other graphing packages this is typically referred to as the the "dataset's category". If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this value/dimension is associated with table's "row" values. Others will refer to this value as the first "cross by" or the first dimension.

Optional secondary group by field

Defines the 2nd field (or dimension) to be used to group and aggregate values by. MS-Excel chart users will commonly refer to this as the dataset's "series" field. If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this field is associated with data table's value columns. Series group bys are optional. Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified.

Defines the optional chart graphic to display.

NOTE: Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified. All other charts will only work with a maximum of 2 group bys e.g. if the fixed group by exists then the series group by can NOT be used with charting or maps.

Optional map graph

Defines the optional map graphic to display.

NOTE: Maps are only available when the category is set to a geographical area and does not have a series defined.
